How to choose or suggest an article topic
A topic on DevKG is a category that groups related articles, such as Careers or Remote work. An article has one topic, or you can leave it without one.
Choose according to the main content. If you describe an interview for a remote job, consider whether most of the article is about recruitment or working from home.
Where readers see topics
In Articles, topics open collections about a particular subject. They appear in a separate block on larger screens and as buttons above the feed on phones. The number beside a topic counts published articles, not views.
A public topic has its own page. Readers can reach it from the topic list or a link beside an article. A topic helps people find content but does not guarantee extra views.
1. Start writing — the site will try to suggest a topic
Open the editor: How to write an article. Enter a title and at least 300 characters of body text. After a pause of about two seconds, the site requests a suggestion.
It may choose an existing topic, propose a new one or leave the field unchanged. Selected automatically means the site made the choice. If no suggestion appears, keep writing or choose a topic yourself.
Until you make a manual choice, changing the title or substantially changing the text length may trigger another suggestion. It does not run after every corrected letter.
Here is an example of the field. Choose your topic in the article editor.
The Topic field: Remote work is selected, the line below says Picked automatically, and the New topic button sits on the right. The open list shows No topic, the suggested New topic: Working from home, Remote work with a check mark, Career and your own Freelance, under review.
2. Check the suggestion
Open Topic and review the options.
| Option | Meaning |
|---|---|
| No topic | You explicitly leave the article without a category |
| New topic: … | An automatic proposal to create a topic when you save; it is still a suggestion |
| A regular name | An existing topic |
| A name marked under review | Not yet public; you can select it if it appears in your editor's list |
If the automatic suggestion fits, leave it. To make the choice yours, select the row yourself, even if it is already suggested.
An untouched field differs from explicitly choosing No topic. If you never chose anything, the site may try to assign a topic after publication. It will not override your explicit No topic choice.
3. Suggest a new topic yourself
- Select New topic… beside the field.
- Enter a name of 2–60 characters. Use a short category such as First work experience rather than your full article title.
- Optionally add a description of up to 300 characters, explaining what belongs here.
- Select Create.
If the site suggests a similar topic, choose Use it when the meaning matches. Use Create mine only for a genuinely different subject. An exact match may select the existing topic immediately.
After choosing the new topic, save the article itself. Creating a topic separately does not save all the editor's text.
Two kinds of new topic
A topic you create through New topic… normally starts under review. You can use it in your editor, but it is not a public category until approved. You can have at most 5 of your own topics under review on one site at a time.
An automatic New topic: … proposal is resolved when you save the article. If no match exists, the site normally creates it without the manual review queue. If a matching topic exists, it is reused and may keep its current status.
An administrator can approve, hide or merge topics. Merging moves articles to the chosen shared topic, so a category's name may change later.
Topic review and article review are separate processes. A topic under review does not itself mean the article was rejected. See Moderation for publication rules.
Change a topic after publication
Open My articles → article menu → Edit. Select another topic or No topic, then Save.
Changing only the topic keeps a published article visible without sending it back for moderation. Changing the text, title, cover or company at the same time may require another review.
If something goes wrong
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No automatic suggestion | Check the title and text length. A manual choice will not be replaced. You can select a topic from the list |
| Topic limit reached | Use an existing topic or wait for a decision on your pending topics |
| Readers cannot see a new topic | Check its status: manually proposed topics are reviewed first |
| Choice disappeared after leaving | Return to the editor, choose the topic and save the article |
